Ashore – on the hard, as sailors would say – a sailboat is not just dormant. She is bulky and inelegant, graceless and hulking. But she is also full of promise. All potential energy awaiting wind and waves to be made kinetic. So, you can imagine our thrill – not to mention hers – when we finally hoisted Arctic Tern into slings, lowered her gently into Newfoundland waters, raised her mast, and bent on sails. This weekend …. shakedown cruise!
This is how the season begins. A crew aboard to waken a sleeping boat. Some TLC for her winter-stiffened systems. A launch. A rig. And a transformation: now, a rugged and graceful dancer, tensed for adventure and good work.
It will be an exciting and important season.
